Unlocking the Power of Creative Mindfulness

Insights and Benefits

Artwork by Lucy Crisetig

People never fail to inspire me when they embrace vulnerability and allow their wisdom to rise up through the simple act of creating with mindful awareness.

One of my clients was dealing with self esteem issues and loss. She was able to release emotions she was holding back about her loss and found that she was blaming herself for it.

Releasing those stressful emotions gave her immense relief and freedom to be herself.

Another client had remarkable insights regarding the power of her own intuition to guide her in decision making. She was truly in awe when she connected with her body and could feel the wisdom in her heart coming to the surface.

Then another, had rekindled the creative spark within her and has gone on to help others in a similar way using art.

The essence of Creative Mindfulness is that it has the ability to remind you who you really are - a creative and aware being whose genius or wisdom arises in the natural state of creative flow.

This is an adventure in learning more about yourself.

Let’s break it down.

What is Creativity?

Creativity is normally thought of as imagination and artistic skill. However, it involves so much more and is available to every single person, whether you realize it or not.

After some dialogue with one of my clients to help expand her mind regarding her issues around feeling stuck and powerless, it only took her a couple of strokes with a watercolor brush to release the emotions that were keeping her stuck. Remember, we’re not creating masterful pieces of art for the world.

Just showing ourselves how masterful we really are.

Creativity encompasses a combination of imagination, intuition, knowledge, and skill. It can be expressed in various forms, like artistic creation, movement, sound, innovation in business, scientific discoveries, problem-solving, or even everyday activities like cooking or storytelling.

A fundamental part of who we are as human beings is our innate ability to create – each and every one of us.

I can’t tell you how passionate I am about reminding people how creative they are.

It doesn’t hinge on whether you can draw or paint. It’s inherent within you, and plays a

crucial role in enriching your experience of life, problem solving and inventing new and amazing ways to live.

The use of creativity in self discovery can be the means to lower your defenses and raise your consciousness enough to widen your awareness of what is possible.

“Problems cannot be solved at the same level of awareness that created them.” – Albert Einstein

It gets your mind off the problem, situation or experience so other possibilities can show themselves to you.

The addictive emotions of suffering and stress can be released through creativity, which then allows your energy to rise up and out of those detrimental states.

When you’re focused on a problem, other opportunities or possibilities are not visible to you. Creativity allows you to open that focus so you can see more.

The divergent thinking that creativity naturally leads you to, lets you see where you can break away from conventional norms, and find ways to adjust your life that make more sense for you.

You can begin to operate on a new level of mind.

What Is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is a process of being present with what goes on in your mind, in your body and around you.

This allows you to open your awareness for new insights, the thoughts in your mind, the things you believe, feelings in your body and patterns of behavior you and others have.

Having my client mindfully connecting to her body gave her an awareness she never noticed before. She was amazed when she could experience her body light up with joy and how it tells her something’s not right. This gave her more confidence and trust in herself.

No more sitting in stress by relying on outside sources for her decisions.

It’s a state of focused attention and heightened awareness, which is most beneficial when you remain non-judgmental. Just observing and accepting your thoughts, feelings, sensations, and surroundings. Once you find yourself caught up in past regrets or future worries, you can redirect your mind to the present and question what you observed.

“Knowing others is wisdom, knowing yourself is enlightenment.” – Lao Tzu

Plenty of research has shown how beneficial mindfulness can be for mental and physical well-being. This includes:

  • Relieving stress levels

  • Improving focus and cognitive functioning

  • Enhancing emotional regulation

  • Increasing resilience

  • Greater overall satisfaction of life

There are different mindfulness techniques people use. For example:

  • Meditation

  • Visualization

  • Breathing exercises

  • Creativity integrated with Mindfulness

When Creativity and Mindfulness Merge Together

Merging the two together is a brilliant way for creativity to bring yourself into a state of flow where the subconscious is more easily accessed. At that point, mindfulness opens your focus enough to help you become aware of what lies in the subconscious programming. Then it becomes available for questioning.

The stress you experience everyday seems to come from the events happening around you. Creative Mindfulness can help to ease the stress by lowering the walls that normally keeps you from allowing enough vulnerability through so you can see other perspectives and discover what’s really true for you.

By loving yourself enough to put you first, you’ll learn to release stress and create more time for yourself.

Everyone around you will be affected and you’ll generate a life you can feel lit up by and love your way through.

The creative modalities can include journaling, poetry, color, line, crafts, and art to help clients reach a relaxed heart-centered state of mind.

The mindfulness journey can include the breath, present awareness of the body, visualizations, timelines, and other cutting edge methods of human growth.

Whether you know you’re creative or not, you’ll find it’s a gentle practice that helps you bring your body, mind and soul together in a creative dance of presence.

I know what it’s done for me, and as a facilitator, it really warms my heart to hear many of my clients say this is just what they needed. To have someone guide them to finding their own wisdom for answers to the issues they face in life.

And those answers are just right for them.

Together with the spiritual teachings of oneness, Creative Mindfulness helps you live authentically so you can…

  • Go from stress and anxiety to quieting the mind and hearing the whispers of your soul

  • Go from feeling lost to understanding yourself better - your values and beliefs

  • Go from feeling stuck and unfulfilled to freeing up the emotions keeping you there

All while feeling lit up with curiosity and play!
